When I was a bride, one of the big milestones along the planning path was when you hit 99 days. Double digits we called it. Well, here I sit, at 99 days til baby is due to make his appearance. I really don't even know what to say other than "how the hell did that happen?!?!"
With my recent yard sale purchases, we are a lot more prepared for baby to come, which is nice. But, we still have SO much to do. We need to sign up for our classes at the hospital. We need to paint the baby's room and put together all of our goodies. We need to wash all of the great clothes and blankets that friends have handed down to us. We really need to kick it in gear!! Maybe this weekend I can do some laundry while Chris is working.
One positive, but unrelated note, is that my dad hopefully has his job back soon! Some of you may know that he was laid off on my birthday in February. He's a respiratory therapist at one of the hospitals back home. Anyway, he's been waiting for an opening so he could go back to work, and it seems two openings came at the same time. I've offered more than once to send them money, but my father always says no. I swear, if he were living in a cardboard box on the street, and one of his kids needed the roof from his box, he'd give it to them, with a smile. I only hope that I can be as selfless of a parent as he is. Love you Dad!!

Reason Number 1,308 Why I Love My Husband
The other night, over dinner, I was having a mild panic attack at the idea that we will be parents, real parents, SOON! What if we aren't ready? What if we make horrible parents? I could play the "what if" game til the cows come home!
Anyway, I asked Chris if he was nervous about it, and he said something about how he wasn't. Much like when he made the decision to get married to me, he thought long and hard about it before hand, but then once committing to it, he was totally confident in his decision because he knew it was the right one. Same with becoming parents. He just knows that we will make good parents and he isn't the slightest bit hesitant that we made the wrong decision.
I swear, that answer made up for all the times he's said the wrong thing!!
As a side note, I see the doctor this Friday at 1:45. I am guessing it'll be a longer than usual appointment, but I am crossing my fingers for good news.

SCORE!!!
I belong to this on line chat group. It started with planning the wedding, and then moved to life after the wedding. I mostly check out the local Denver ladies, but I surf on there for other topics I am interested in. I belong to a cooking club that meets monthly that I found there as well.
Anyway, there were some "nesties" that had posted about having garage sales this weekend. Some of them live pretty close to us, so I had Chris wake me up this morning and I set off in search of their houses. One lady in particular had twin boys, so I knew she'd have some good stuff. Boy, was I right!!
I bought an infant car seat, two bases (one for each of our cars), a step stool (that I just might be using to get myself into bed!), a high chair, a vibrating seat thing, 2 blankets and some little clip on toys for the car seat. And I got it ALL for $125!! I felt like I was robbing her blind, but she was happy to see them go. She's got 2 of most everything!
My parents are coming to visit my younger sister at the end of this month, and I'll get them for one night. After they come and go, we will paint the nursery and start working on setting things up. I feel better having the car seat purchased. If baby came early, we'd of had to leave him at the hospital since we had no car seat!
P.S. I am feeling mostly better. No more contractions, and virtually no more pain in my left side. I am looking forward to my doctor visit on Friday. We'll get one last ultra sound before we paint the nursery Dallas Cowboy blue, but I am also going in with a list of things to talk to my doctor about. Last week was a little scary, and I can't say thank you enough to my wonderful mother for answering all of my questions! Thanks Mom - I love you!!

Quick Update
Last night, the pain in my side came back with a vengeance. It came and stayed for about 3 hours. It stayed while I cooked dinner, and while I sat and ate dinner and while I walked and while I laid on the couch. It also seemed to have picked up in intensity from Tuesday. But, I slept all night without issue and feel ok this morning. Go figure!
I called the nurse again today and we talked about it, and the doc said it might be an umbilical hernia. She said to try wrapping an ace bandage around it, and that I could also use a low set heating pad. But, she said if they didn't work, to call tomorrow. She was a little suspicious because I can't feel any kind of lump or anything, but I appreciate she wants to rule out things before doing anything drastic.
My mother also asked me to keep an eye on baby and pay attention to how much he's moving . . . . basically to see if it's dropped off any. It seems when you focus on something like that, they must take 5 hour naps! Baby was pretty still most of last night, and this morning as well. The nurse told me I needed to feel 10 kicks in 2 hours, so I am sitting at the office with a pad and pen in front of me. She said anything less than that and I'd need to come in and be hooked to the monitors.
I have really been blessed with an easy pregnancy thus far and have to admit I am a little nervous. My mom has been great at answering my questions, and the doctors office has been great at not making me feel silly for calling them. I am sure it will all be fine, but I am not above asking for a few spare prayers either.
I don't go see my OB til next Friday. I am generally in and out in 5 minutes, but I think this time we'll have more to talk about for sure!

Feeling a Little Under The Weather
Sunday morning I woke up with a headache, which is pretty rare for me. 2 Tylenol took care of it and I didn't give it all much more thought.
Monday during the day, I had dull cramps way down in my abdomen. They weren't terribly painful but did catch my attention. By late Monday afternoon, the cramps were still there, and I could feel my stomach tighten up and then relax. My ankles were all puffy and I just didn't feel myself. I raced home, made dinner, and then went for a walk. I've said all along that I would start walking every night starting June 1st. So, even though I wasn't really up for it, I went. I made it less than 1/2 a mile before I came crawling home. I couldn't bend over to get on the couch without feeling a "bruised" spot on my left side - just over and above my bellybutton. I laid on the couch and timed what I assumed were contractions - be they braxtonhicks or the real thing - every 8 minutes for a good hour or so. But, when I was ready to go to bed, they had mostly stopped and I slept through the night without issue.
Yesterday the cramps were gone and the tight feeling was almost gone. But it had all been replaced by a very full feeling. I ate some strawberries Tuesday afternoon and felt like I'd had an 8 course meal - I was just stuffed!! I finally called my mom (thank god for nurses!!) and we talked, and she convinced me to go ahead and call the doctor. So, I called and spoke with one of the nurses. Based on what I told her, she thought that yes, I had been having contractions - though there really isn't a way to determine which ones - and to take it easy. She said to call back if I felt that full feeling again. I took another short walk - 1/2 a mile or so. The cramps stayed away, but the tightness came back and so did the pain in my left side. But, with an hour or so on the couch, they all subsided.
Today I only really have the pain in my left side.
I am going to make another call to my mom, and then maybe another call to the nurses. I am trying not to be that annoying patient who calls 24/7, but I've never been pregnant and this is all new to me. I want to keep walking, but it seems that when I do, I come home and pay for it.

6 Months Today
I am excited, nervous, scared, sad, anxious, and happy all at the same time. The thought of labor honestly scares the crap right out of me. I mean, if I could keep this kid in me forever, I think some part of me would be ok with that. I have my moments of panic when I wonder if I will be able to do what I need to do when the time comes, both physically and mentally. Medicine isn't my thing, it generally makes little to no sense to me. I am desperately hoping my mother is here when I deliver. Desperately.
I am not sure we are even close to ready for baby to make his appearance in approximately 112 days, but I don't suppose we ever really will be ready either. We have a crib that's still in a box, a bassinet that's still in a box, a dresser that's still at the store, and a hand full of clothes and diapers and a mattress in the basement. No car seat. No pack n play. No swing. No bottles. No blankets or toys. Nothing. The planner in me is having a very hard time with this, but it's hard not knowing for sure if we are having a boy. Maybe next month we can buy a few things just to set my mind at ease. I do think that Chris has swayed his vote from "no theme" on the nursery over to the possibility of a Dallas Cowboys nursery. I am game either way. But I think as much as the idea of a room full of ladybugs turned him off when we thought we were having a girl, the idea of an entire room devoted to his beloved Cowboys really does excite him.
When we watch tv, I especially look at the names of the people, and pair them with Holbrook and see what I like. If we're sitting together, I say them out loud to see what we like. So far only a few are sticking, but we really need to invest in a Baby Name Book. Soon!
112 more days. 112 more days.

Mourning The Loss . . . . .
. . . . of my ankles! Oh my goodness, yesterday, my right foot looked like something from the Flintstones! It was really quite icky!! I pointed to it and said "look at my ankle" and, being the smart ass that my wonderful husband is, Chris' response was "I just see leg". Well, thank you! It's been a pretty rough week around the office and I've been running from floor to floor and office to office and my ankles are paying the price.
I also realized the other day that I'm a week shy of 6 months. How the heck did that happen?!?!
Aside from being puffy, we're all doing well. I have finally officially gained 1 pound more than what I started this pregnancy at. I cheated and weighed myself today, thinking for sure I'd gained 5 or more, so I was relieved to only see 1 pound gain. Baby is growing perfectly which is great news. He's moving all the time! Right now when he moves it's exciting and new and always puts a smile on my face. I am betting in a few weeks, it won't be nearly as much fun. And when it's 2am and he's trying to tell me something by kicking my kidneys, well, I won't be amused at all.

Better Make That Team BLUE!!
I had my doctor appointment on Friday, and the ultrasound tech slipped me for a quick peak. I wasn't on the table 2 minutes when she said "Oh, wow, Traci, you are going to hate me!" I knew immediately what she meant, and I just laughed. I mean, what can you do? My doctor came into the room as well for another reason, and they both said, without a doubt, that we are having a BOY!! My doctor was there because in the ultrasound a week ago, she had not seen some developments with the heart that they like to see, so she'd come to watch. Good news is we still have a health baby. Different news is we can no longer use my grandmother's middle name of Elizabeth!
Breaking the news to Chris was hard. He really, really, really wanted a girl. I kept telling him that I promised I wasn't lying. I think once the initial shock wears off, he'll be really excited and looking forward to playing catch in the yard and having someone who likes to go fishing with him and watching football on Sundays.
I go back in a month, and will take the gestational diabetes test, and have 1 more doctor ordered ultrasound. They have some concerns about the stomach, and the heart, so they just want to take one more look. After that, I start going every two weeks, and my parents will be here for my last appointment in June. I am excited to share an appointment with them.
My blood pressure was still up, but the good news is it hasn't climbed any higher than the 133 over 88 that it was last time. My weight is still down, but Dr. Logan says that baby is measuring perfectly at 1 pound 1 ounce. If she's not going to worry, then neither am I.

Team Pink . . . . For Now
I got a call early Friday morning from the doctor's office, telling me that our ultrasound tech had a very sick son, and may, or may not be in all day. Our appointment was at 3. So, I begged and explained that we had skipped all of the genetic testing, and had waited until the ultrasound, so we really, really needed to get in. They finally called me at 11:20 and asked if we could get there by noon, and of course I said yes. So, we raced to the office, which was a great trial run to see how long it takes to get from my office downtown to the hospital!
Anyway, the tech skipped her lunch and spent an hour with us, trying to get baby to cooperate. She was able to take all of the necessary photos and measurements and assured us that we had a clean bill of heatlh. But, baby was a little uncooperative. I tried a cold glass of water, a bottle of juice, rolling from side to side, standing up, and Chris even pushed on my belly. The tech got 3 shots that made her 80% confident that she could get the sex right. She was clearly frustrated and said she'd never had so much trouble getting a good "money shot". She was so sweet to stay and try so hard.
We went to dinner at Mortons. Everyone knew that we had "news" and kept asking us if we'd opened the envelope. Dinner was great and the service was amazing. Over dessert, we finally opened it. When we both saw the check mark on "girl" it was such a great feeling. Of course, we'd be happy with whatever God gave us, but both Chris and I wanted a girl.
My doctor was not available, and so I have to go back on Friday at 11am. The tech was great, and said to come see her either right before or right after my appointment and she'd try it one more time. As much as it is killing Chris, we aren't buying anything pink just yet. Maybe I'll get a 4 shot latte on my way to the appointment?!?! That'll really get the kid moving, huh?!?
So, for now, we happily sit on TEAM PINK!!

To Be Continued

Twenty Weeks = 5 Months
Here is a 20 week belly shot. Actually, it's 20 weeks and 3 days, but who's counting?!? Well, truth be told, we are!! I know that I say this a lot, but it's really hard to believe how fast time is going by. We are at the half way point, with less than 20 weeks to go. Before we know it, our little one will be here.Friday is the big ultrasound, and we couldn't be more excited! Our dinner reservations are made, and we're just waiting for Friday to get here. It's a little unnerving, in that we chose not to do any of the testing that could have shown us possible issues or birth defects. But, with such high false positive ratings, it just didn't seem like the best choice for us. Friday will really be the first, and only, chance for them to catch any issues the doctor might see. We'll for sure mention to the ultrasound tech that we didn't have the tests, and ask her to go slow and be thorough. Cross your fingers that we get a clean bill of health, and that our kid cooperates and shows us whether we are buying pink or blue.
I can tell you that Saturday, when Chris knows for sure, there will be no stopping him, no denying him, he will be buying something that isn't gender neutral. And, god help our checkbook if it is a girl, cause he's ordering Dallas Cowboy cheerleader outfits in 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, 2 years, etc. Oh yes, the kid will be a Dallas Cowboys fan, boy or girl, like it or not!
My book says this week the baby is the size of a small cantelope. Chris says you can tell it's my baby, because every size comparison is fruit! A raspberry, a plum, a mango, a cantelope. It's always fruit! I suppose he's got something there.

18 Week Belly Shot
18 Weeks Today
I finally had dinner with my good friend Candace last night. Some of you may remember her from the wedding - she and her boyfriend, Corky, are the ones who salsa danced at the reception. Anyway, we've been trying to get together for forever, and finally had a chance last night. I got to spill the beans in person, which I just love doing.
I tried to take an 18 week belly shot this morning, but the camera was out of batteries. I'll try again tonight and see if I can't manage something. It's amazing to me how much change there is in 18 weeks, even though I didn't start this as a skinny beanpole. My clothes are getting tighter and I may need to face reality a little sooner than I expected.
Here's what my book says about this week:
You might start to feel your baby moving around anytime now, which is a great way to take your mind off your bothersome back. Oh, my aching back! If you've uttered those words more than once this week, here's why: Your uterus, now about the size of a cantaloupe, is causing your body's center of gravity to shift, pulling the lower back forward and pushing the abdomen out. On top of all that, joint-loosening pregnancy hormones are wreaking havoc on your muscles and ligaments, adding up to one big ouch! But while your pregnancy back pain has got you tied up in knots, your baby's getting ready to bust a move. At five and a half inches long and five ounces in weight, he or she now may be large enough for you to feel him or her twisting, rolling, kicking, and punching his or her way around the womb. Plus, he or she is developing yawning and hiccupping skills (you may feel those soon, too!) and his or her very own unique set of toe and fingerprints.
It's hard to believe that in 2 more weeks, we'll be half way though this part of the experience. It's just crazy. I remember that initial shock of a positive pregnancy test like it was yesterday. Where does the time go?!?!

Update From the OB
I had my 3rd visit with the OB on Friday. My weight is fine, although I am still down a total of 4 pounds from when I started the process, so I did get a little lecture, but since I gained 1 pound from my last appointment 4 weeks ago, she wasn't too harsh. My blood pressure, which is either quite "text book" at 120 over 80, or totally ridiculous, was at 130 over 88. The nurse waited a few minutes, and even tried the other arm, but got the same number. So, I need to keep an eye on things. I am sure it's at least partially related to working 10 hour days 4 days a week.
The doc answered a few questions, and we talked about how I've been feeling, and then we heard the baby's heartbeat. It was a strong 150 beats per minute. She measured my tummy, and said everything looked and sounded great.
My next appointment is May 8th, and Chris will be coming with me, cause it's our big ultrasound one when we find out if we're having a girl, or a boy. We will ask the tech to seal the answer in an envelope and then we'll go to dinner and open it together. I figured it was a little more special and romantic that way. Guess it's the Pisces in me or something.
Anyway, baby and mamma are doing great. I am heading to Kohl's today with a gift card from Donna, and money from my dad, and a 20% off coupon to get some maternity clothes. Even my loose jeans are starting to get a little tight. I think by the end of the April, I won't be able to wear them anymore.

Family Photo
I've had 2 ultra sounds so far, and this is really the only picture where you might believe I am growing a baby, and not a peanut or a blob. Sorry it's not the best quality, but it's the best I can do. If you squint, and cross your eyes, you can see the baby's rib cage and spine and even both sides of the brain. I think you'd have to uncross your eyes to see the baby's mouth, but it's there, complete with eye (it was face down, so we got a side profile) and nose.My 3rd OB appointment is this afternoon. I am not expecting any more ultra sounds til May, but that's the big one when we find out if it's a girl, or a boy.

4 Months Today
I can't believe I am 4 months today - what the heck?!? How did that happen?!?!
Chris and I were out last week, and I looked and looked and looked at the maternity clothes at Target. I even tried a few things on. Most were too big. One looked horrible and I'd never leave the house in it. On one hand, I am thankful that I haven't gained any weight and that my regular clothes still fit. On the other hand, I want to actually feel pregnant, and I want to wear cute maternity clothes. Having had little to no morning sickness, having not yet felt the baby move, and having started this process over weight, it's hard, emotionally. I want to look pregnant. I want to feel pregnant. Lord knows in a month or so I'll be totally regretting that statement, but it's true. I suppose I have 5 more months to get as big as a house and have my ankles swell to the size of footballs.
I pre-registered for the hospital today, and I've been looking around at pediatricians, and day cares. Hey, they don't call me OCD for nothin!!
It's a Date
My BFF will be flying in for our shower, so I needed to get a date picked so she can start looking for tickets from Austin. Looks like August 15th will be the baby shower. So excited!

Going to Register
Before moving to Texas, Ang and Rod gave us bags of clothes and a bunch of other great baby stuff. Chris and I went through it this morning. We've also received some stuff from Chris' boss, Jeff, and a few yard sales that Chris had found along the way. Some of it we are donating (mostly the yard sale stuff) today on our way to Target.
We are heading there to register. I think we'll register there, and at Babys R Us. It's hard, since we don't know the sex of the baby yet. I will say based on the wives tales I've read, I may actually be leaning more towards it being a girl, but I still have no real guess one way or the other.
I know that this is something Chris has really been looking forward to. The other day, he came home with a Phoenix Suns jersey for a little one, and the winter parka thing he spotted at Babys R Us a few weeks back. The shopping has begun, and somehow, I don't think I can stop it.
My next OB appointment is April 10th. I am feeling good, and dare I say it, I think getting some of my energy back, which would be a welcome change. I still have 5 weeks of holding down the office by myself, which some days seems like a very monumental task!

Right On Track
My 2nd OB appointment was this afternoon. I asked the doctor a few questions, and it seemed we had more of a connection this time, which was nice. Last time she seemed a little distracted. We talked about my weight, and about my needing to be better about eating. There are days I look at the clock and realize it's 11:30 and I've had nothing more than 2 cups of coffee, which is completely unacceptable.
She warned me that I might be a little early for her to find the heartbeat with her little Doppler machine, so I wasn't too freaked out when she couldn't. The good news is I got another ultra sound. The bad news is Chris wasn't with me. I had a different tech this time - I guess she's the lady I'll generally see when I have ultra sounds. Very nice, and funny. Anyway, she measured the baby and I am right on track at 13 weeks 1 day. We saw the spinal cord and the rib cage, and even both sides of the brain - it was very cool, and finally made me feel like there is a person in there and not just a blob. The baby wouldn't roll over and show it's face, but we did see it suck it's thumb or finger, which was cool as hell to watch. The heartbeat was 150, which she said is perfect.
I go back in 4 weeks. My parents will be here the end of April or beginning of May to see my sister when she has her baby, and if I can steal them away for a nano second, I'd love it if they came to my May OB appointment with me. But, that's a ways down the road and I won't worry about it for now.
So, for those of you wondering, we are still set with a September 17th due date.
